Culture Commons respond to cross-party commitment to cultural devolution

Updated: Jun 3

The Culture Commons team were invited to the 'Convention for the North' yesterday to hear from Secretary of State for Levelling Up, Michael Gove MP (pictured below) and Labour's Shadow Secretary of State Labour, Lisa Nandy MP about their future plans for devolution.

The Convention, bringing together together political and civic leaders from across northern regions of England (including many of the Metro Mayors and Leaders of Council we work with here at Culture Commons), set out a bold ambition for a renewed prosperity in parts of the country that have historically seen chronic underinvestment.

Perhaps most encouragingly, the leaders voted culture and creativity as one of top top three priorities for economic growth and thriving communities, demonstrating the increasing understanding of the benefits that the creative and cultural sectors can bring to local people.

Further, Secretary of State for Levelling Up, Michael Gove MP and Labour's Shadow Secretary of State, Lisa Nandy MP both confirmed that cultural policy would be part of their plans for further devolution across the country. Culture Commons' Director, Trevor MacFarlane responded to the news:
